What It Means to Be Born Again | Jesus and Nicodemus

Understanding what it means to be born again is one of the most important truths in the Christian faith, and Jesus explains it clearly in His conversation with Nicodemus in John chapter 3. This moment reveals one of the most foundational truths of the Christian faith: the necessity of being born again.

Nicodemus was not an ordinary man. He was a respected religious leader and a member of the Jewish ruling council. Because of his position, he understood the Scriptures and the religious laws of Israel. Yet despite his knowledge, he still felt the need to seek out Jesus privately.

When Nicodemus approached Jesus, he acknowledged something significant. He recognized that Jesus must have come from God because no one could perform the miracles Jesus was doing unless God was with Him. However, while Nicodemus sensed the truth, he still did not fully understand who Jesus was or what salvation truly meant.

Therefore, Jesus immediately began teaching him about the most important step in a person’s spiritual life.

The First Step: Being Born Again

Jesus told Nicodemus something that would have sounded surprising and even confusing:

“Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” (John 3:3)

Nicodemus struggled to understand what Jesus meant. From a human perspective, the idea of being born again seemed impossible. Naturally, he asked how someone could be born when they were already an adult.

Jesus then clarified the meaning of His statement.

“Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” (John 3:5-6)

In this moment, Jesus revealed an important spiritual principle. Physical birth brings us into the natural world, but spiritual birth brings us into the kingdom of God. Being born again is not a physical process. Instead, it is a spiritual transformation that occurs when a person believes in Christ and receives new life through the Spirit of God.

Just as natural birth marks the beginning of physical life, spiritual rebirth marks the beginning of a new spiritual life in Christ.

Moving From the Old Life to the New Life

The Bible repeatedly explains that becoming born again means moving from an old life of sin into a completely new life.

The Apostle Paul describes this transformation clearly:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

This change is not simply about adopting new habits or following religious traditions. Instead, it is about experiencing a deep internal renewal.

When someone is born again:

• Their relationship with God is restored
• Their sins are forgiven through Christ
• Their identity is transformed
• Their life begins to reflect the character of Jesus

In other words, spiritual rebirth is a transition from the old self to a new life shaped by faith.

Why Faith in Jesus Is Essential

Before someone can experience this new birth, the Bible explains that they must first believe in God and accept Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 11:6 reminds us:

“Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”

Faith is the starting point of salvation. A person must believe that God exists and that Jesus is the Son of God who came to save humanity.

Jesus Himself made this truth clear when He said:

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

This statement reveals that salvation is not achieved through human effort or good works. Instead, it is made possible only through faith in Jesus Christ.

Confessing Jesus as Lord

After believing in Christ, the Bible describes another important step in the process of salvation: confessing faith openly.

Romans 10:9 explains this clearly:

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

This confession is not merely repeating words. Rather, it is a declaration of faith and allegiance to Christ.

The book of Proverbs reminds us that our words carry great significance:

“The tongue has the power of life and death.” (Proverbs 18:21)

Therefore, when someone confesses Jesus as Lord, they are declaring publicly that they belong to Him. It becomes a statement of faith that reflects what they believe in their heart.

The Role of Baptism

In many Christian traditions, baptism follows a person’s decision to believe in Christ.

Baptism is a physical act that symbolizes a spiritual reality. When someone is immersed in water, it represents the washing away of the old life of sin. Rising from the water symbolizes new life in Christ.

Even Jesus Himself was baptized. Although He was without sin, His baptism demonstrated obedience to God and served as an example for believers.

While baptism does not replace faith, it is an important outward expression of the transformation that has already taken place within the heart.

Why Humanity Needed Salvation

Jesus came into the world because humanity had a serious spiritual problem: sin.

Scripture explains that every person has fallen short of God’s perfect standard.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

Sin separates humanity from God. Because of this separation, people cannot restore their relationship with God through their own efforts.

However, God did not leave humanity without hope.

Romans 5:8 tells us:

“God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, God provided a way for people to be forgiven and reconciled to Him.

The Light That Came Into the World

Jesus also described Himself as the light of the world.

In a world filled with spiritual darkness, Christ came to reveal truth and guide people toward salvation. Yet the Bible also explains that many people resist the light because they prefer the darkness of sin.

John writes:

“Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:19)

When someone comes to Christ, the light exposes their sins. While this can lead to repentance and transformation, some people resist this process because they do not want to change their ways.

However, those who choose to follow Christ step into the light and begin living according to truth.

The Heart of the Gospel

The message of salvation ultimately centers on one of the most well-known verses in the Bible:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

This verse summarizes the heart of the gospel.

God’s love for humanity led Him to send Jesus into the world. Jesus did not come to condemn people but to offer them salvation.

Through faith in Christ, people are forgiven, restored, and given the promise of eternal life.

A Choice Every Person Must Make

The conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus reminds us that every person must make a decision about Christ. Jesus explained that there are only two ways to live: living for God or remaining in spiritual darkness. No one can serve two masters. Ultimately, each person must choose whom they will follow.

The invitation of the gospel remains open today. Anyone who believes in Christ can experience spiritual rebirth and new life.
